How to Perform a Hockey Stop: A Step-by-Step Guide
1. Get into Position:
• Start by skating at a comfortable speed.
• Keep your knees slightly bent and your body relaxed.
2. Turn Your Body:
• Begin turning your hips and shoulders in the direction you want to stop.
• If you're stopping to the right, your left shoulder and hip should lead the movement, and vice versa.
3. Position Your Skates:
• Angle your lead skate (the one in the direction of the stop) slightly inward.
• The trailing skate should follow, creating a "T" shape with your skates.
• Both skates should be on their inside edges.
4. Apply Pressure:
• Push down into the ice with the inside edges of both skates.
• Use your legs to apply pressure, causing friction with the ice.
5. Even Out the Pressure:
• Distribute your weight evenly between both skates.
• This helps in coming to a smooth and balanced stop without falling.
6. Practice Balance:
• Keep your core engaged to maintain balance.
• Use your arms for additional balance if needed.
7. Finish the Stop:
• As you come a stop, bring your skates parallel to each other.
• Ensure your knees are still bent to absorb any remaining momentum.
Tips:
• Practice slow stops first to get comfortable with the movement.
